Reliable Water Solutions for Remote and Island Communities

Island and remote communities often struggle with water access due to saline intrusion, drought, and unreliable infrastructure. Transport delays, limited spare parts, and a lack of skilled maintenance make centralized systems costly and impractical. Miranda designs resilient, decentralized water solutions with built in redundancy, SmartCell monitoring, and preventive maintenance support to ensure long term water security and community self reliance.

Overcoming Isolation with Sustainable Infrastructure

Sustainable Water Reuse in the Maldives

Maximizing Resources to Reduce Costs in Remote Settings

A luxury resort chain in the Maldives faced critical water challenges due to its remote location, where transporting supplies is expensive and unreliable. Miranda implemented modular Miracell systems to treat all wastewater from the resort, including blackwater and kitchen waste. The treated effluent was reused for landscape irrigation, eliminating the need to truck in additional freshwater.

The system also produced stabilized sludge, which was dried and blended with peat moss to create organic fertilizer for on-site use. This full cycle approach reduced costs related to water delivery, fertilizer imports, and waste management. In hard to access island environments, reusing every possible resource is essential to maintaining operations and controlling overhead. With low energy use and SmartCell monitoring, the system required minimal staff involvement and provided proactive alerts to ensure reliable performance. By transforming all wastewater into usable outputs, the resort achieved a self reliant model that supports both economic and environmental sustainability even in one of the world’s most logistically challenging setting.

Flexible RO Solutions

One Standard System for Many Unique Sites

The same resort group operated across multiple islands, each with different water demands and environmental conditions. Despite these variations, Miranda deployed R/OCell® systems across all properties using a consistent technology platform. Mobile containerized units were used for smaller sites, while larger Flex models served flagship resorts. On one island, two R/OCell® systems were installed in parallel to ensure full redundancy, allowing one to be taken offline during low occupancy periods to reduce energy use.

Because all systems were based on the same core design, they shared many of the same parts, consumables, and operating procedures. This standardization simplified staff training, inventory planning, and system oversight across multiple locations. SmartCell automation enabled centralized performance monitoring, remote diagnostics, and alerts, making it easy for the resort group to manage water operations across its portfolio. With consistent spare part kits, unified maintenance checklists, and streamlined troubleshooting, the R/OCell® platform gave each resort location the independence to operate effectively without needing custom engineering or external technicians. It proved that one resilient solution could meet many different needs without complexity.

Proven Systems for Demanding Environments

Miranda combines three powerful technologies to secure clean water access in island and remote locations. Miracell® treats wastewater for safe reuse with low energy input. R/OCell® purifies seawater or brackish sources with SmartCell automation for efficiency and monitoring. AtmoCell generates drinking water from humid air in warm climates. Together, they provide scalable, off grid water independence even in the world’s most challenging environments.

Miracell®

Wastewater Treatment for Healthier Communities

Miracell is a rotating biological contactor system that uses biofilm coated disks to treat wastewater efficiently with minimal power. It is ideal for islands where energy and space are limited and logistics are complex. Miracell’s modular design allows easy deployment and phased expansion, making it perfect for growing tourism, seasonal demands, or fluctuating population needs. In reuse mode, it produces water safe for irrigation, cleaning, and discharge.

On remote islands, Miracell® is used to recover treated water for irrigation and convert stabilized sludge into dried biosolids for on-site fertilizer. When paired with SmartCell, systems can be remotely monitored and adjusted using performance data, reducing maintenance risk and identifying issues early. Miranda provides preventive maintenance checklists and Island Kits with essential spare parts to resolve wear and tear quickly. These features make Miracell® a resilient, environmentally conscious alternative to centralized systems that enables island communities and resorts to operate sustainably and with full water independence.

R/OCell®

Flexible Desalination with SmartCell Control

R/OCell® is Miranda’s flagship reverse osmosis system designed to convert seawater or brackish water into clean, drinkable water. It is available in a range of configurations from compact mobile units to large skid mounted Flex systems. Its containerized design is well suited for harsh marine environments and can be deployed on docks, rooftops, or compact utility spaces. Integrated SmartCell technology enables remote control, performance tracking, and automated flushing cycles to extend membrane life and reduce manual intervention.

For island installations, Miranda offers R/OCell® in three formats to meet diverse site needs. The Mobile version is fully containerized with climate controlled insulation, ideal for plug and play deployment. The Railmount version arrives preassembled for fast indoor or sheltered installation, while the Flex version allows full customization for integration into existing structures or harsh outdoor environments. Each system includes durable corrosion resistance and with standardized spare part kits (Island Version), clear maintenance manuals, and user friendly smart controls, R/OCell® ensures uninterrupted water access even in hard to reach locations. It empowers island operators to confidently manage their own systems without relying on delayed service calls or external technicians.

AtmoCell

Off Grid Water from the Air

Atmocell is an atmospheric water generator that extracts moisture from humid air to produce clean drinking water. Designed specifically for warm, coastal climates, Atmocell is perfect for islands without reliable freshwater sources or access to wells. It requires only air and electricity from solar, grid, or generator and operates quietly without chemical additives. Atmocell is ideal for emergency backup, mobile clinics, or small off grid communities needing daily water independence.

Its built in purification stages ensure output meets WHO drinking water standards. Compact and modular, Atmocell systems can be scaled up for resorts or used individually by homes, eco lodges, or staff facilities. With minimal maintenance requirements and no need for external supply lines, it eliminates the need for bottled water shipments or trucked supply in sensitive ecosystems. Miranda supports Atmocell deployments with training, maintenance schedules, and fast replaceable filters. When combined with other Miranda systems, Atmocell offers a layer of security and flexibility that strengthens water resilience in regions where even basic water access is unreliable.ms confidently without waiting for delayed service calls or external technicians.
